Application

  • The closest relative with ability gets first opportunity; others must wait for his choice. A non-relative doesn’t redeem (cannot redeem); a non-relative “buys out” the contract.
  • Ruth went to the only family member she knew who may have had the ability to pay the whole debt without knowing that he did not possess the right to redeem.
  • Willingness is essential to make the transaction occur. Redemption must occur from love and concern for the other person, which never can be forced!
  • In the Book of Ruth, there is only one person who meets all four qualifications.
  • Tamar allows Judah’s lust to cause her pregnancy when Judah did not follow through with another Levirate Marriage. Tamar bears twins—one of whom is Perez. Rahab the harlot, by faith, hides the spies and marries Salmon, bearing Boaz. Ruth the Moabite, by faith, comes to Bethlehem, has Levirate Marriage to Boaz, and bears Obed. The lineage from Abraham to David has “sinners” and Gentiles, and David himself is a murderer.
  • The legal right to sit on David’s throne comes to Joseph the husband of Mary who also is disqualified for the throne, but that curse does not disqualify the Lord Jesus Christ because He is Joseph’s stepson!
  • Mary is descended from David through Nathan, so the Lord Jesus Christ, Mary’s son, completely misses the curse for a descendant sitting on the throne of David.
  • The Lord Jesus Christ is descended from David through Nathan, escaping the curse of Jehoiachin (Coniah), and receiving the legal right to sit on David’s throne through His stepfather Joseph, a descendant of David through Solomon and Jehoiachin, who is under that curse.
  • Conclusion: Therefore, when we consider our need for a Kinsman-Redeemer regarding our sin, apart from Jesus Christ, all others—including ourselves—are disqualified.
